The Story of John Dower House
John Dower House is one of Cheltenham’s most impressive buildings and dates back to 1812 and is Grade II listed. It’s instantly recognisable to visitors and residents alike. But beyond the grand Regency façade lies a rich hidden heritage.
Originally constructed to be one of Cheltenham’s first hotels, the building was granted the Royal Coat of Arms when Adelaide, Duchess of Clarence (later Queen Consort to William IV) visited – this is still displayed over the building’s portico, almost 200 years later. The Duchess’ visit led to the hotel being renamed the Clarence Hotel.
In 1859, the clientele of the building became less illustrious as it was transformed into a police station and courthouse. It remained police property until 1970. The building was then converted to offices and was occupied by a Government department, until it was vacated in 2010.
After several years of inactivity, John Dower House became a part of Lifestory and was transformed into 12 stunning Regency apartments.
